Costs of my India Trip

Daniel 1 Euro = 57 Rupees (RS)
1 USD = 50 Rs

In case you plan to come here, a little help for planning:
My total costs for 6 weeks were about 1000 euros, that includes 2 flights within India (2x3600 Rs) and the plane Ticket to Thailand (5700 Rs).
The costs for hotels were between 150 Rs (in Sera) and 660 Rs (in Dharamsala shortly before the Dalai Lama came). In general, a Hotel/Guest House is about 400 Rs, and I always insisted on attached bathroom. In general, accomodation might be a lot cheaper if you share your room with another traveller, or if you don't insist on attached batrooms.
Food is really cheap, you can eat here for less than 50Rs. My average Breakfast was about 100Rs, and dinner usually around 150Rs. A few times I went to fancier places, a delicious lobster dinner at he Bombay store in Bangalore is 1300Rs per Person. The food in Kolkata is delicious, and I spent around 400Rs for an excellent dinner.
Trains are cheap if you take the second class, but fortunately I had to do this only once. I usually traveled 2AC, which means an Air-Conditioned sleeper coach. Tickets for overnight-trains were between 800 and 1400Rs, depending on the disance and speed. If you travel 2nd class sleeper, you pay around a third of 2AC.
Only for the Auto-Riksahs I can't give you rules. It depends on your bargaining-skills. I met people (Jon in Bangalore) who paid 2200Rs for a distance not worth 200Rs. The best is if you insist on the drivers using the meter, and see how far down they go with their prices. in some places you get lucky and they actually use the meter...
