The Value of an Indian Life

Daniel Three hours ago a guy died 30 m (30 yards) away from me. He jumped overboard on the tourist boat back from Elephant Island (Mumbai). He commited suicide. The sea was rough and he could not swim. When the boat turned around I wanted to jump after him, but before the boat got close enough he disappeared. I gave my valuables to Pedro, a guy from Mexico. I was ready to jump. I thought we were going closer to him, to rescue him.

The boat turned away. The crew said it was an accident. They didn't even get all the way to the place were he drowned. They didn't care.

Why didn't they (we) spend at least 10 minutes searching for him?

I knew India is rough, but I didn't know what this meant. I'll never go diving in India, that's for sure.

When I reported this to the police, they were hardly interested. Yes, the crew and everybody had to give their statements to the cops, but why didn't we stop? Is a life not worth searching for 10 minutes?
